The Gnaoua World Music Festival was first launched in 1998 in Essaouira, Morocco, with the vision of celebrating and preserving the unique music and cultural heritage of the Gnaoua people. This music, known for its hypnotic rhythms and spiritual themes, originated with the Gnaoua, descendants of enslaved West and Central Africans who integrated their musical traditions with Berber and Arab influences.
Founded by Neila Tazi and a group of cultural activists and artists, the festival sought to provide a platform for Gnaoua musicians (maalems) to perform alongside international artists from diverse genres such as jazz, blues, and reggae. This blend of styles has made the festival a unique cultural event, attracting thousands of visitors worldwide.
Since its inception, the festival has become a vital part of Essaouira’s identity, helping to promote the city as a cultural hub and contribute to its local economy. It offers a space for cultural exchange and dialogue, bringing together people from different backgrounds to celebrate music and heritage.
The Gnaoua World Music Festival typically takes place annually in late June or early July. The 2024 festival is scheduled for June 20-23. During these four days, the city of Essaouira comes alive with performances on multiple stages set against the backdrop of the historic medina and stunning Atlantic coastline. This festival remains a must-attend event for those interested in music, culture, and the vibrant spirit of Morocco.
